SWP to Lawmakers: Increase Budget to Protect Children from Cigarettes and Vapes

MANILA, Philippines - Social Watch Philippines (SWP) calls on lawmakers to increase budget allocations for protecting children from cigarettes and vapes, citing alarming statistics showing rising youth tobacco use.
During a recent press conference, SWP Lead Convenor Prof. Emeritus Leonor Magtolis Briones emphasized that current funding levels are insufficient to combat aggressive industry marketing targeting young people.
"Our children are being deliberately targeted by tobacco companies through social media influencers, flavored products, and point-of-sale advertising near schools," said Briones. "We need stronger enforcement and monitoring, which requires adequate resources."
SWP's analysis shows that the Department of Health's budget for tobacco control programs has remained stagnant despite the growing challenge of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. The group recommends doubling current allocations and earmarking sin tax revenues specifically for youth protection initiatives.
"Every peso invested in preventing youth smoking saves many more in future healthcare costs," Briones added. "This is both a public health and fiscal responsibility issue."
